The Scott Expedition
In 2014, following 105 days in Antarctica, British adventurers Ben Saunders and Tarka L’Herpiniere made the first completion of Scott’s iconic 1,795 mile Terra Nova route from the very coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back. The Scott Expedition is the longest polar man-haul in history.
I worked on the Scott Expedition for almost 3 years and accompanied the team on various training trips, and to the start of their journey in Antarctica. During the final months before the expedition began, I shot, edited and scored a film each week - a behind the scenes series of mini-documentaries about the planning, preparation and logistics behind such a huge expedition. Below is a selection of some of them. For more information about the expedition and it's team please visit scottexpedition.com
North Pole Expedition 2011
In March 2011, I accompanied British polar explorer Ben Saunders to the start point of his north pole speed record attempt from the north coast of Canada. The attempt was a solo and unsupported expedition, and his target was to reach the pole in 35 days. The series of mini-docs below were shot, edited and scored on location.
Skye
Skye is an island off the west coast of the Scottish mainland. This film was made in November 2011, and marks the beginning of training and preparation for the Scott Expedition.
Greenland
Greenland is, by area, the world's largest island. Yet with a population of under 60,000, it is the least densely populated dependency or country in the world. In May 2012, Ben Saunders, Martin Hartley and Alastair Humphreys spent 14 days in Greenland on a training trip for a future Antarctic expedition.
